Flower Care

How to keep your flowers beautiful

A little care goes a long way. Follow these tips to get the most from your arrangement.

When your flowers arrive

  • Trim 2–3cm from the stems at a 45° angle — this increases water uptake
  • Remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline
  • Place in a clean vase with fresh, cool water
  • Add the flower food sachet - just follow the instructions on the packet

Ongoing care

  • Change the water every 2 days and re-trim stems
  • Keep flowers away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and air-conditioning vents
  • Keep away from fruit — ethylene gas from ripening fruit shortens flower life
  • Mist delicate flowers like sweet peas or ranunculus lightly with water

Flowers in bud form

We send tulips, poppies, peonies, and lilies in bud so you can watch them open. Place them in a warm room with bright (not direct) light to encourage blooming. They'll continue to grow and move in the vase — it's one of the best parts.

Native flowers

Australian natives like proteas, banksias, and waratahs are incredibly long-lasting. They prefer cool water with no flower food, and will often dry beautifully in the vase.

Orchid plants

Water once a week by submerging the pot in water for 10 minutes, then letting it drain fully. Keep in bright indirect light. Never let the roots sit in water. Remove spent flowers by cutting the spike above a node — a secondary bloom often follows.

Peace lily plants

Water when the top inch of soil is dry. Peace lilies prefer indirect light and will tell you they're thirsty by slightly drooping — they bounce back quickly after watering. Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth occasionally to keep them glossy.
